The Holy Bible from the book of Matthew 25:41-46 reads as follows: 41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’ 44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’ 45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’ 46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life”.
Today, the case in question is the Mauritian President, Ameenah Gurib-Fakim who was entrusted to be the first female President of Mauritius by her poor people and party. Unfortunately, she has proven to the worst leader of the country as she is now the first female President who fails to finish her political term in power due to greedy, selfishness and corruption. On 17th March, 2018, Ameenah Gurib-Fakim finally resigned as Republican President after increased public outcry and political pressure from the citizens and party as she risked being impeached for spending more than € 25,000 (more than U$30,000) on personal purchases like jewelry, perfumes, lotions and other luxury goods by using public resources. How can someone, a woman in this case, a mother of the land became too greedy and selfish to the extent of starting using public resources for her personal luxuries? This is cruelty against humanity, an immoral face of political leadership and a regrettable gender addition to corrupt political leadership in Africa. In other words, President Ameenah Gurib-Fakim only followed the exact footsteps of Jacob Zuma, former President of South Africa who resigned last month for similar corruption allegations.
Another sad political story is that of President Edgar Lungu who has been accused of abusing tax payers money to fly huge party and government delegations overseas for extraordinary luxury experiences and real life pleasures. For example, On 14th March, 2018, News Diggers reported that a Treasury Cash-Flow Dossier reveal that millions of Zambian kwacha or American Dollars are spent on luxury activities such as dinner dance cruises, walking safaris, shopping and limousine hires during President Edgar Lungu’s international trips. A critical review of President Lungu’s trips to the United Nations in September 2015, show that the Zambian National Treasury deposited over K17 million on Lungu’s expenditures in America and was spent on corrupt and unexplained costs at Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek in Dallas Texas such as limousine hires, dinner dance, boat cruises, walking safaris, shopping and shipping shopped cargo from the US to Zambia for PF party and government officials. This is a Head of State and his offcials as well as friends spending lavishly using tax payers money when the levels of absolute poverty among his voters stand at above 70%. How can a Zambian President and his official team from a country that is rich in wild life find themselves plundering tax payers money by taking safari walks in America? Its immoral crime against poor humanity. Ironically, these revelations are against a background were President is reported to have accumulated abnormal wealth in few years timeframe and openly declared to be among the richest Zambians. The Zambian leader is also a self-confessed humble as well as honest Christian.
Clearly, it is very sad to note and stress that the wheels of corruption and looting of public resources are spinning very fast in SADC Presidential Palaces now than before while the poor majority get poorer. If the people who vote them into power fail to stand up and demand better governance or SADC does not call for an urgent extraordinary summit to seriously discuss and sharply reprimand their peers on this vice, the SADC sub region risk losing presidents being forced to resign like Jacob Zuma or Ameenah Gurib-Fakim every month or quarter on the same immoral accounts and political sins of looting and plundering public resources in poor states. And if this is the standing reality across the continent, then many African Presidents will go to hell and not heaven.
