In a press briefing in Lusaka yesterday, the United Party for National Development (UPND) led alliance of opposition political parties announced that it is taking Edgar Chagwa Lungu and some of his aides to the International Criminal Court (ICC) for attempting to kill Mr. Hakainde Hichilema (HH) in Sesheke last week. Speaking in the Press Statement Issued at Intercontinental Hotel in Lusaka on Wednesday, 19th February 2019, the Opposition Alliance reported that “at about 14:30hrs on that Fateful Friday, Zambia Police Service Officers from State House Division, appeared from nowhere and, without warning, opened fire on the crowd of Maondo Ward Residents whom the UPND President was addressing as part of his campaign itinerary for that day… The UPND President together with his entourage and supporters were forced to scamper in all directions in fear of their lives as the State House Police Officers continued to open fire with automatic weapons on the unarmed and defenceless UPND entourage and Maondo Ward Residents”, the press statement read.
The Opposition Alliance added that “even after the UPND president and his entourage had dashed into the nearby bush and abandoned their vehicles at the village, the state house police officers continued to pursue them further into the bush, were they continued to fire their automatic weapons. In total, an estimated 1,000 rounds of ammunition were fired on that afternoon, against the unarmed and defenseless UPND president and his supporters”.
As such, the UPND led alliance informed the Zambians that they have taken the decision to report specific individuals to the International Criminal Court (ICC) in the Hague, for orchestrating, perpetrating, facilitating, funding and executing a well-planned wave of political violence across the country, whish violence risks the peace and security of this nation. these individuals include the following: (i) Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu – President of the Republic of Zambia; (ii) Mr. Stephen Kampyongo – Minister of Home Affairs; (iii) Mr. Davis Mwila – PF Secretary General; (iv) Mr. Kaizer Zulu – Special Assistant to the President for Politics; (v) Mr. Amos Chanda – Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations; (vi) Mr. Francis Muchemwa (aka America 2) – PF Cadre; (vii) Mr. Mpange Kachingwe – PF Cadre; (viii) Abel Mwale – PF Cadre; and (ix) Eddie Gowa – PF Cadre.
However, it is important to note that Mr. HH himself, the rest of his entourage and purported party members who were shot at or fired with over 1,000 live bullets by purported state house police officers in Sesheke are all very safe, fit, health and unhurt. Thus, it is still very strange to note that there was no physical injury or any death reported in the said DEADLY ‘political assassination and military confrontation’ involving HH in Sesheke-maybe he is a living ghost or phantom and not human.
The core mandate of the ICC is to act as a court of last resort with the capacity to prosecute individuals for genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes when national jurisdictions for any reason are unable or unwilling to do so. Zambia is a ratified party to the 2001 Rome Statute which established the court.
